CAMBRIDGE SUB-UNION. l OPENING OF SEASON. lIAUTAPU’S GOOD WIN. The Cambridge Rugby Sub-union commenced its club competitions on Saturday afternoon in tine weather. Following are results of the games—• Hautapu v. Northern. llautapu seniors had an easy win over Northern by 25 points to 6. The winners were a well-balanced team which combined well. Some very pretty movements were seen by their baoks, and wdth bad tackling and lack of combination in the Northern team ilautapu were not hard pressed to win. For the winners F. Tapper (2), J. Morriss and T. Bourlce scored tries, and in another try three Hautapu players fell on the ball together. Holmes kicked two penalty goals and converted one try, and F. Tapper converted another. For Norttehn E. Shaw gained a try and Chitty kicked a penalty goal. Mr E. Scott was referee. Leamington v. United. At Leamington No. 1 ground Leamington and United seniors fought a great battle, the former winning by 10 points to 3. Both packs of forwards made the game fast. United backs were seen in many likely movements in the second spell, but lack of finish spoiled their chances of winning. Early in the game a United player, Moore, received a bad knock and left the field, United continuing with 14 men. For Leamington Martin scored two tries, both of which" were converted by Cooper. A penally goal kicked by Hewitt represented United’s score. Mr J. Wilkinson was referee. Junior Games. In the junior competition United had an easy victory over Leamington .by 20 paints to 6. Leamington commenced with nine men, the complement heing made up Is ter with barefooted Maoris. For United, Brett, Smith (2), E. Arnold (2) and Campbell scored tries, Brett converting one. Hoskins scored for Leamington and Richmond kicked a penalty goal. Mr Bain McDonald was referee. Hautapu juniors heat Northern juniors, after an exciting game at Matangi, by 7 points to 5. The game was dominated by forward play, though the backs handled well, in spite of a wet ball. For Hautapu Laurent scored a try and Shannon kicked a held goal. A Try by Ellis (converted by Robinson) gained Northern’s points. Mr G. Wallace was referee. Third grade results were: United 11 v. Leamington 6; Hautapu 10 v. Northern 3. MATAMATA V. WARDVILLE. This . gams was played at Matamata, and provided the most even match, seen this season at headquarters. The Matamata forwards were on Mop right through and the Wardville scores were flashes In the pan.

Wardville, after having the worst of the exchanges for some time, opened the scoring, Munro breaking through from a line-out to feed Newsome. The latter oarried on till Graham overhauled him, but managed to feed Dixon, who scored. The kick failed. The next movement by the Wardville backs started from K. Wilson at half to- Lynch to J. Wilson, who shOTt-punted and followed up to smother Fitzgerald. Solomon came up fast and scored Wardville’s second try. Douglas missed the kick. Towards the end of the spell Matamata, who had a succession, of free kicks owing to over-eagerness by the Blue pack, put on three points through the agency of Fitzgerald. In the second half Matamata held the advantage territorially, and from a ruck, Sweetman sent well out to Carlson, who ran across and converted his own try. Shortly afterwards Story picked up and nan strongly, and though well collared by Sharpe ran across to put Matamata further ahead. The best passing rush of the day produced Matamata’s last try, when the ball went right across the facies for Sweetman to run round behind the posts. Carlson made no mistake with the kick and the final score was Matamata 16, Wa"dville 6. Mr W. Aoake was referee. Patetere v. Hlnuera. At Hlnuera, Patetere had a runaway victory over the home team, winning by 27 points to nil. B. Inman (3), Stewart, I. Inman, Fell and Spence- scored trios, B. Inman converting three. JunlorsA-Rangaiti 17 v. Waharoa 0, Walton 14 v Wardville 6, Matamata 3 v. Hinuera 3. Third Grade. —Ilinuera 11 v. High School 8, Patetere 21 v. Walton 0.
