A SUGGESTION FOR TRAMPERS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In view of the number of trampers who have recently lost themselves in the 'bush might I offer a few suggestions that might assist others? The first essential is to carry a plentiful supply f of wax matches securely corked down in a strong and damp-proof bottle. Immediately direction has been lost do not become panicky, because in that frame of mind the position becomes worse. Light a fire; first' to keep warm, and secondly to give a direction to searchers —by smoke in the daytime and by the light of the Are at night. These precautions are usually taken by experienced bushmen. If at the commencement of the tour it is the intention of the trampers to return by th 9 out-going route, then it is advisable to cut niches in treetrunks when passing or to break branches here and there. From these marks no difficulty should be experienced by the explorers on the return journey.—l am, etc., ALEX. H. WILKIE. Takapuna, April 24, 1933.
