ADVENTUROUS CAREER.
100TH. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. RETAINS ALL HIS FACULTIES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NELSON, Wednesday. Mr John Colthart, of Nelspn, yesterday celebrated his hunredth birthday. lie was born at Ablington, Lanarkshire, and arrived in Hobart in 1855. Later he came to New Zealand, and took part in the gold rush to Gabriel’s Gully. He joined the Wanganui Rangers’ Regiment for the suppression of lawless Maoris.
Eventually he became a telegraph linesman in Taranaki, the West Coast and Nelson, and subsequently was road overseer in the Glenhope area. Except that he is a little hard of hearing, Mr Colthart has all his faculties, and takes an interest in current events, especially those affecting Scotland. He attributes his longevity to regular habits —“ early to bed and early to rise.” He remembers th 9 bonfires on the Lanarkshire hills at the time of the coronation of Queen Victoria.
