AN ADDRESS.
CHILD GUIDANCE CLINICS. On a recent visit to Hamilton Dr. Emma Buckley Turkington addressed a combined meeting of members of the Federation of University Women and the National Council of Women of New Zealand. The subject of her talk was Child Guidance Clinics. These ’clinics have been established within the last few years in London, Glasgow, Bristol and Bath, and other large cities in England, to deal with problems of behaviour and character in children from three years of age upwards. Particular stress w r as laid upon the preventive nature of the work. The individual problems are dealt with from the medical and psychological points of view, and great assistance Is given to parents and to the children themselves.
Children, whether rich or poor, pass through these clinics, and advice is given as to the type of education likely to have permanent value in the individual case. The wmrk goes to the root of ‘.social hygiene. Many children who, by reason of mental defect, now go to recruit the criminal population, are turned into healthy occupational work and, under suitable guidance, will become useful and happy citizens.
