LADIES’ HOCKEY.

WAIKATO ASSOCIATION. “The number or teams entered for the local competitions was lower than the previous year, which holds the -record to date,” stated the annual report of the Waikato Ladies' Hookey Association,, which reviewed a successful season, especially where representative matches were concerned. In the senior 'competition the cup points were: Old Girls, 14, Technical A, 8; Technical Old Girls, 7; Hula, 3; and Technical B, 0, while in the junior series the points were Roto-o-r&’ngi, 14, Matangi, 13; Ngaruawahla, 5; and Leamington, 3.

“The standard of play is still very low, especially in the senior teams, due no doubt, to the lack of practise and coaching,” the report continued, “The junior teams showed an improvement on last year’s play and it is hoped that the ensuing season will see a great improvement in .both sections.

“The usual seven-a-side tournament in conjunction with the Waikato Association, was held on June 3, and again attracted large entries, the ladies’ matches were divided into two sections, junior and senior, the senior being won by Paterangi, and the Junior 'by Te Mata. We have to thank Mr Newell for his generosity In presenting a cup for the Junior section. The local seven-a-side tournament was held on September 3, and again it was not well supported. We would suggest that this competition be held earlier in the season to make It a suocess. It was won this year again by Old Girls,

Representative Fixtures. / “More representative matches were played this season than last and we wish to congratulate the Waikato team on their success. Two teams were sent to Morrlnsvllle 'to play two Piako teams, and, return matches senior and junior, were played in Hamilton at the end of the season. We were unable to send a team to Auckland for Country Week as the girls were unable to .get the time off to go but we trust that a team will be sent next season.

“Although it was decided that we should affiliate directly with the New Zealand Association, owing to lack of support the project fell through and It was deolded to affiliate with Auckland again for the season. We regret that we have reoeived this set back as the hockey in the Waikato district Is certainly In need of stimulation and should be controlled by someone In closer contact with the teams than Auckland is.

Shortage of Rererees. “Again we suffered from lack of competent referees especially for country matches. As it is of the utmost importance that matches should be controlled by association referees, we would urge players who are retiring from play to consider qualifying as referees and so show their interest in the game. We thank the Referees’ Association for their services during the season and hope they will in-, crease their members and be able to supply referees for all our matches. We wish to thank Mr Fabling and Mr Bergerson for their work In selecting our teams and suggest that an official selector be appointed for the ensuing season. ■ “We regret to report, that in common with many others.-we are ; unable to our budget this" year, due to the entertainment of visiting teams and the heavy ground fees." The report concluded with thanks to all those who had assisted in the suooessful functioning of the association during the past year. Election of Officers. ■ The election of oflfloers for the ensuing year resulted:—President, Mr W. G. Fabling; vice-presidents, presidents .of all clubs; secretary and treasurer, Miss I. M. Mills; committee, president, secretary, Mrs Vernall, Misses Hepburn, Webster, M. Morrison and Taylor. It was decided to affiliate with the Auckland Association this year. The committee were delegated to decide upon the conditions of play for the Hughes Trophy, which has been presented for competition in the junior section.

The date for the opening of thp season was fixed as Saturday, , Maj 13. Entries close on Friday, April 28.
