AUSTRALIA—NEW ZEALAND. THE POTATO EAfBARGO. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. SYDNEY, April 25. The Canberra correspondent of the Sun says the only question not finally settled in connection with the proposed trade agreement between Australia and New Zealand relates to potatoes.. The Federal Government is not willing unconditionally to remove the embargo on New Zealand potatoes, but it is willing to negotiate for the entry into Australia of ‘potatoes from areas certified to he free from potato disease. PACT WITH DENMARK. LONDON, April 24. The forthcoming British trade agreements with Denmark and other countries are not likely directly to affect the Australian and New Zealand butter trade as Britain at Ottawa pledged herself to l'efrain from arbitrary restrictions on the Dominions and to maintain the duty on foreign butter for five years.
The newspapers state that the outstanding feature of the Anglo-Danish treaty Is that 63 i»jr cent, of Britain’s bacon from foreign countries will tie purchased from Denmark. Moreover Britain will not tax bacon. .Danish imports of coal will be 80 per cent. British instead of the present 65 per cent. Government circles claim that the arrangements will not hurt British farmers’ interests. NO INCREASE IN BUTTER DUTY. PACT REGARDING QUOTA. (Received April 26, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, April 25. It is reported that the Anglp-Danish agreement provides that the British duty -on butter will not be increased, and if quotas are fixed* Denmark’s share will not be reduced more than five or seven per cent. BEEF FROM ARGENTINE. LONDON, April 24. The Daily Express says agricultural statistics show that Argentine beef is swamping the British market. British beef prices are declining owing to the Government’s quota policy and the Argentine importer is getting |d to ljd a lb. more than before the beef quota was established. On every animal the British farmer sells he loses 50s to 60s.
