RUGBY FOOTBALL.

NEW SEASON OPENS. TE AROHA GAMES. The Rugby season in Te Arolm opened on Saturday at the show grounds in the presence of a satis- , factory attendance. City v. Manawaru. Manawaru forced the pace at the outset and soon invaded City territoij. - Moloney broke away and got to halfway before being collared by Eastwood.. City then retaliated and got well back, Manawaru 'being forced to send the ball over from a free kick. On resuming Moloney worked his way through with a tine dash and scored. City 3, Manawaru 0. Frear and Lee were prominent in breaking through the rearguard, and taking a good pass Jackson got into Manawaru 25. A long kick by Rackham forced Manawaru. With better combination City worked right down to the line. A spirited dash by Rackham resulted in a try which was converted. City 8, Manawaru 0. Manawaru attacked vigorously, but Rackham-, Johnson and Jackson relieved .with clever passing. •In the second spell Betts got away, but Edwards stopped his progress and dribbled the ball through the pack. Manawaru assumed the aggressive and kept City busy on the defence. A fine rally by City resulted in Jackson scoring. City 11, Manawaru 0. The Manawaru forwards showed up well, and Munga broke away in fine 'style Lecce dashed through, but was brought down by Barrett and Crawford got away with a nice run. The ball west out to Rowe, who dashed over the line. City 14, Manawaru 0. Mr J. Gavin was referee.

JUNIORS. ELSTOW V. HOT SPRINGS. springs kicked \ off. Forward scrambles followed. The Elstow forwards came again in a fast dribble and.K. Clark scored a good try.Tlosenfeldt failed to convert. Elstow 3, Springs 0. Elstow soon had the upper hand and w r ere strongly invading Spring’s last quarter. Biartelli headed a fast Tush over the line and succeeded. In. securing Elstow’s second try. E. Stewart succeeded- in crossing in the corner. Denton failed to' convert. Elstow 9 Springs 5. The hefty Elstow pack soon bustled their way to the eastern corner. Springs fought to within 5 yards of the line. Here some fast forward work took place, from which I. Hogan scored. J. Hogan narrowly missed with the kick. Elstow 9, Hot Springs 8. ward scramble under the uprights. Here Springs was penalised and Denton 1 taking the kick sent the leather neatly over the bar. Elstow 12, Springs 8. From a scrum A. Martelli secured and scored. Denton failed to convert. Elstow 15, Springs 8. Springs confiend Elstow inside their own half and

all but scored upon two occasions. The game ended with the score unchanged. Mr J. Buchan was referee.

WAIPA ASSOCIATION. The Rugby season in Waipa was opened at Albert Park, Te Awamutu, on Saturday, when one senior and one junior match were played. ‘ : Seniors. ROVERS V. TE AWAMUTU. The rain slowed down play, but there was a good sward of grass and players kept things lively, though several juniors were brought on to fill up the teams. Rovers were first to attack but Te Awamutu forced. Again Rovers pressed to the line and was almost over, but Thompson, off-side, stopped the attack. Then Holmes was stopped by Martin right on the line. Te Awamutu were hard-pressed. A sudden sortie saw the ball go the length of the field, but Sinclair just failed. Another attack by Rovers did not succeed, and after a brief attack by Te Awamutu, half-time came without score.

Again Rovers attacked, and at last were successful, Aspin getting over to score a nice try. Wood .failed. They kept up the pressure, hut Te Awamutu came away and W. Martin forced for Rovers. Rovers soon, relieved and had their opponents defending hotly.' Headed by Speedy and Turney, Te Awamutu reached the line, where 13. Quin failed with a penalty, and again Rovers forced twice running. Rovers rpshed ' through. Again Te. Awamutu compelled them’ to force. Another attack was stopped by a penalty and then Quin failed with, a free kick. Just on time Rovers scored again, Aspin again getting over in the corner. Wood • failed, and the game ended soon afterwards.

Rovers 6, Tc Awamutu 0. Mr R. L. Adams was referee. JUNIORS. AROHENA v. TOKANUI. Arohena beat Tokanui by 18 to 6. Scorers for the winners were J. Prendergast (2), P. Wright, Parsed, Hovell and S. Prendergast. For Tokanui M. Hinopo and G. Kopa scored penalty goals. Mr Vickers was tho referee.
