ENGLAND v. SPAIN. FORMER WINS THE SINGLES. LATTER SECURES DOUBLES. MADRID, April 22. The Davis Cup contest between Britain and Spain was begun in Barcelona yesterday when the first singles matches were played. Perry (Britain) beat Maler, 7 —5, 7 —5, 6—2, and Austin (Britain) beat Sindveu, 6—o, 6 —3, 6—2. Maier’-s chief asset was a fast, high kioklng servloe, which often rendered him invincible, but Perry speedily mastered it and counter-attacked with excellent ground -shots. Austin caused a sensation by playing in running shorts whioh Is unprecedented in the Davis pup contest. In the doubles to-day Maier and Dural (Spain) beat Perry and Hughes, 6 3, 6—l, I—6,1 —6, 4—6, 6—3. The Spaniards were the speedier in the first and second sets. Though the Englishmen’s determined stand in the third was aggressively -continued in the fourth, accompanied by the hurricane service of Perry, they could not overcome the initial leeway and the better team won.

England defeated Spain la -both the -final singles in the Davis Cup contest, and thus won the draw by four matches to -one. Perry defeated Sindren, 6—l, 6- —3, 6—o. Austin defeated Maier, B—6, 7—'s, 6 —l. Austin’-s speed completely nonplussed Maier.
