THE AUCKLAND MARKETB. ACTIVITY IN GOVERNMENT STOCK (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. When the Auckland Stock Exchange opened to-day after the Easter recces there was evidence of considerable activity in Government securities. In inscribed stock late sales were recorded in the 4 per cent, issues at only 5s below par, and there were further reported sales in the same four issues, showing later a drop or ss. This business followed a rise in value of all 4 per cent, issues during March and early April, and showed that buyers were now prepared to pay the prices at which sellers would part with their holdings. Thus there was a lixing of values which indicated firmness. Further parcels were available at par In all except the 1955 Issues, and there was a general margin of £i separating buyers and sellers compared with tiie quotations on the last day before Easier. This showed a IDs reduction in buyers’ limits and a rise of 5s by sellers. j No Government bonds Were available, and buyers opened to-day at a level of £99 for three of the four issues on which the rale of interest is now 4 per cent. In other sections of Hie market the only feature was ft fall Ju Hie values of goldmining shares, showing the local reaction to America’s departure from the gold standard. For Waihis Iho reduction In buyers’ limits was over 2s. The hanking and Insurance sections wore quiet, with only a penny reduction in buyers’ offers tor Commercials and a drop of 3d in the offers l'or New Zealand banks.
