THE MARIST ORDER.

ST. JOSEPH NOVITIATE. OPENED NEAR TIMARU. TIMARU, Sunday. An important milestone in the de- \ velopment of Roman Catholic education in New Zealand was passed today with the official opening of the St. Joseph Novitiate at Claremont, 10 miles from Timaru, for the training of novices for brothers of the teaching Marist Order. The ceremony marked the establishment of the first Marist novitiate in New* Zealand. Those present included Archbishop Redwood, Bishop Liston • (Auckland), Bishop Brodle (Christchurch), Monsignor Cahill and Monsignor Ormond (Auckland) and Brother Benignus, / Provincial of the Marist Order in New \ Zealand. There was an attendance of 3000. The ceremonial was impressive. Th.e clergy proceeded through a guard of honour of Hibernian Lodge members In regalia to a dais. Brother Benignus extended a welcome to the archbishop and bishops. He said the building would accommodate 30 students. The object In setting up the novitiate was to render a service to the Church, in New Zealand and the South Sea Islands by training teachers deeply imbued with religious spirit. Archbishop Redwood expressed his pleasure at opening the fine establishment, which was large enough to serve.the needs for many years. Bishop Liston said the needs of the Church in New Zealand were growing In extent and in variety. Bishop Brodie commended the efforts of the Marist Brothers to the generous support of the Catholics of New Zealand. It was announced that Bishop Brodie had donated £IOO to the novitiate.
