WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT FAIRFIELD There was a fair attendance of members and visitors at the April meeting of the Fairfield Women's Institute at which Mrs Chapman presided. Several new members were enrolled. A use'ful demonstration on the making of mocassins was given by Mrs Mullins, and proved very interesting. Much appreciation was shown by all, and Mrs Mullins was heartily thanked. “Any article made from waste” was the competition for the month, and resulted In quite a large entry of thrifty, novel and artistic artioles. Mrs Paterson won first place, while Mesdames R. Holland, C, A. King and A. Waite tied for second place. The roll-call for the month, “What our menfolk think of the W. 1,” brought many amusing and interesting replies. Special mention was made of our first Institute baby, the little son of Mrs W. King.

A solo sung by Mrs John McKinnon, with the accompaniment played by Miss McKinnon, was very much enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Bullock, Fensom, and Rhodda, and a very pleasant afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem.

TAUPIRI BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Taupiri Women’s Institute took place In the Taupiri Hall. Mrs Williams, the president presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs Williams was appointed delegate and remits were discussed for the bi-annual meeting of the Waikato Federation in June. A “Cornish reading” by Miss Roskruge and the making of a “Humpty,” demonstrated by Mrs Williams proved very interesting. A one-act play, “The Hostesses Husband," given by Mrs A. J. Smith and MrS'L. E. Clarke, caused amusement. A competition, the prettiest traycloth, brought numerous entries, Mrs Sowerby’s being placed first, with Miss Gertie Buss second.
