WAIKATO MINES.
STOP-WORK MEETINGS. TRIBUTE SYSTEM OBJECTED TO. HUNTLY, Thursday. Owing to stop-work meetings being held no work was done to-day at four of the five mines in the Huntly"district, the exception being Pukemiro, A meeting was held at Glen Afton yesterday morning and others at Rotowaro, 1 Renown and MacDonald yesterday afternoon. A large meeting of Hunlty miners who did not attend any of the meetings yesterday was held at Huntly last evening. It Is understood that as a result of the management of Glen Afton Collieries, Limited, informing the miners on Monday that the mine was about to be worked on the tribute system, a strong protest Is being made by the men, and it is believed- yesterday’s meetings included lengthy discussions regarding this development.
The report that It is proposed to Introduce the tribute system at the Glen Afton mine was referred to the head office of Gleri Afton Collieries, Limited, yesterday, when it 'was stated that the company had no statement to make.
