MEETING OF COUNCIL.

THE RAGWORT PROBLEM. At the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council at Tirau there were present Messrs Anderson, (chairman), Bruce, Cox, Dee, Morris, Nickle, Pohlen and White, and Fitzgerald, engineer, and Beck, clerk. The Putaruru Chamber of Commerce wrote in connection with ? former letter that the points involved in its resolutions in regard to the ragwort problem were: (a) The setting up of a committee consisting of one member of the council, one of 1 lie Putaruru Chamber of Commerce, and one of the Putaruru Farmers’ Union; (b) The drafting by the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce of an outline scheme for localising ragwort control and for certain amendments to the Noxious Weeds Act; (c) The consideration of tills outline scheme by the three bodies mentioned; (d) Upon its adoption by the parent bodies all local bodies to bo circularised and Farmers’ Unions in the North Island which may be interested; (e) The arranging of a conference of these bodies with the object of having its provisions passed into legislation, it was considered that the machinery of the present Act was a failure.

Cr. Bruce said that eventually they would have to form noxious weeds boards, just the same as the rabbit boards.

Or. White was appointed to represent the Matamata County Council on the committee to be set up to go into the question. It was decided to serve notices to all ratepayers to clear their frontages in Matamata County. Councillor’s Resignation. Cr. ,T. Moir, Peria Hiding, tendered his rsignation as a member of the council. The resignation was accepted and Cr. Moir is to lie thanked for his services. A Big Proposal. \ proposal emanating from Mr Slaughter, Commissioner for the Auckland Province for Unemployment, was forwarded by the secretary of the Matamata Unemploymenl Commidre, Mr Slaughter staled Dial Mr X. Cole had acquired an interest in 30.000,000 feel of limber situated at '11,,'. ;ti mite peg near Atiamiirl. To get this road converted into c 4th class road to stand 4J ton traffic Mr Cole is prepared to negotiate with the Matamata County, to find £250 cash and submit to t royalty of 4d per 100 feet on 30,000,000 foot payment to be spread over 10 years. The council is to provide material, supervision r.nd gear, and the unemployment board to find labour. The approximate estimate for the work was £3OOO, and the estimated royalty for 10 years, £SOOO. The engineer reported that the Taupo Totara Timber Company have it in view, as soon as demands for timber warrant, to extend their present line into the Tatua Block. The estimate for 5 miles of new line includes £BOOO for formation wages. This line would be extended into the hush under discussion by the addition of another 5 miles of railway. If the line were so extended it would be of great advantage for settlement purposes. lie favoured negotiations being opened with the Taupo Totara Timber line for an .Cxtenlion which would provide some £16,000 for'unemployment and at Ihc same time be of material advantage. Messrs \V. Slaughter. provincial commissioner of unemployment, F. S. Dyson, assistant engineer. Public Works Department and N. Cole, wailed mi llm council in connection with Ibis mailer.
