RECENT CRITICISMS. VOICED IN PARLIAMENT. STATEMENT IN DENIAL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. A statement was issued to-day on fhalf of the trustees of the Now /ealand Institute fo" the Blind in rcjly to the recent criticism in Parliament.

•Referring to the allegation that tho director had inflicted corporal punishment on young Inmates, the statemejit says that the Institute records proved beyond doubt that dining eight, years the director has so punished only one hoy. The punishment consisted of three strokes of a light cane inflicted after numerous warnings by the housemaster, matron and others. The boy’s offence was stealing.

The trustees Invite citizens to visit tho Institute and satisfy themselves. The children a"e well cared for, and the director has their love and confidence. With reference to tho workshops tho statement says these aro in existence largely through the director's hard work In creating a market for goods, and the interests of workers are looked after by their own workshops committee.
