MOTUEKA SEAT.

COALITION VICTORY. AIR HOLLAND’S CONTENTIONS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WESTPORT, Friday. Mr 11. E. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, this evening said that many people would be curious to know the basis on which the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, arrived at his conclusion that the voting in the Motueka by-election yesterday constituted a_n endorsement of the Coalition Government’s policy. The figures so far available showed that 3777 votes had been cast for the Government and 3953 against it, said Mr Holland, leaving the Government in a minority of well on toward 200. The presence of an antl-Government Independent candidate was the sole factor that made victory possible for the Coalition. Mr McKenzie throughout the campaign was bitterly antagonistic to the Government.

It was clear that an overwhelming majority of the votes cast for the Independent candidate came from electors who were wholly hostile to the Government, continued Mr Holland. If ’there had been a siraightout contest between the Government and Opposition candidates, Mr Webb must have won.
