SCHOOL JUBILEE.
HAMILTON WEST FUNCTION NEW GROUNDS OPENED. LARGE CROAA r D PRESENT. A milestone in Hamilton’s short but momentous history was reached today with the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Hamilton West School. Inseparably linked with the progress and development of the town, the school, during its 60 years of existence, has sent into the world men and women of sterling worth, many of whom are prominent figures In their respective spheres: Though dark clouds presaged rain this morning, the wea'ther ’cleared and remained fine for the big programme of events this afternoon. Besides teachers, past pupils, parents and scholars there was a good attendance of the general public. Paramount on the day’s programme was the official opening of the splendid new sports ground and memorial steps. These, together with various other Improvements, including two punga pergolas, add greatly to the attractive appearance of the surround-' ings. Efficient organisation was responsible for a continuous round of amusements. Inter-school sports and novelty Faces proved especially interesting to the juveniles, while a variety of stall and side-shows weTe well patronised. Proceedings commenced with the hoisting of the flag by Mr Edward Jones, and the ringing, of the school Dell by Miss Chivers, two of the.oldest pupils. Children from Standards 2 to 6 then marched to the new ground led by the Pipe Band. The new grounds and improvements were then officially opened by the Hon. ,T. A. Young, Minister of Health, and member -for the district, while the Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, declared the memorial steps officially open. Speeches were given by Mr A. M. Bisley, chairman of the school committee, Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston, chairman of the Home and School Association, Mr H. G. Hall, headmaster, and representatives of the old pupils. The Municipal and Regimental Band then lead the gathering In the singing of " Land of Hope and Glory." A full report of the speeches will appear on Monday.
