THE ESCAPEES.
BROUGHT BEFORE COURT ___ SENT TO GAOL FOR THEFT. WHAKATANE, Thursday. The two prisoners who escaped from the Borstal Institution at Waikeria last Saturday and were captured in the Taneatua district after a chase and struggle with the police, Graham Morton (21) and Arthur Clayton (20). appeared in the Whakatane Police Court this afternoon before local justices and were charged with thefts committed in the district. They both pleaded guilty to three charges of theft and were sentenced to one month's imprisonment on eacli charge, and were remanded to To Awamulu lo.be dealt with in connection with their escape from the institution.
The two men will leave under escort for Tc Awamulu to-morrow morning. They will later appear in Hamilton on charges in connection with the taking of motor vehicles to facilitate their passage across country after escaping from the institution.
