RAILWAY CHARGES.
TRANSIT OF LIVESTOCK. REDUCTION REFUSED. An intimation that at regretted it i ■could not grant a reduction in rail charges was given by the former general manager of railways, ‘the late Mr P. G. Rousscli, in a communication received by the executive committee of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association this morning. Recently, -ihe association wrote asking that consideration ho given a proposal to*reduce charges for the carriage of livestock on the railways. Mr Roussell said the Railways Board was entirely sympathetic with the principle of reducing charges to the lowest point consistent with the present minimum costs of operating and with regar dto financial conditions af-w-ith regard to financial conditions afand effort of the hoard was to concede some reduction in freight charges if It could be found ‘that such a course could be justified not only from the j standpoint of the consequent results from Ihe present volume of rail traffic but from any likely increase of livestock •traffic on I lie railways which consistent with the experience of tho department in oilier branches of the service might not unreasonably he expected.
