CARPENTERS’ AWARD.

OFFER BY EMPLOYEES. TO BE CONSIDERED BY MEN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Conciliation proceedings in the dispute between the New Zealand Federated Builders and Contractors’ Industrial Association and the Amalgamated Society or Carpenters and Joiners commenced to-day on a Dominion basis before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. W. Newton. A reduction in ihe wages for carpenters, joiners and joiners’ machinists to 2s an hour was asked for by the employers, while the employees sought the old rate of 2s 3|d an hour. It was agreed that a worker responsible for carrying out a work and who gives instructions to workers should receive not less than Is a-day extra. The employers asked for *44 hours week and ihe employees for 40 hours. The employers declined to depart from the original offer in regard to overtime rates and holiday pay. Some minor concessions regarding general conditions were offered. The union will consider the offer and give a reply when the conference resumes to-morrow.
