Following the unsuccessful prosecution of Melbourne Trutli publisher, the Attorney-General, Mr J. G. Latham, announced that the Government will introduce an amendment to the Crimes Act xvhich will prevent a defendant, who is the publisher of a newspaper, pleading when he is charged with certain offences, that he was ignorant of xvliat had been published in his paper. William Arthur Payne, printer and publisher of Melbourne Truth,- was charged in the Civil Court, under the Commonwealth Crimes Act, with having incited members of the crews of the warships Australia. Canberra, Albatross, Tattoo and other ships to rnutinv. Defendant pleaded not guilty, lie said he did not write the article and had not known of its publication, lie was acquitted by the jury and discharged _____
