GARDEN PARTIES

WAIKATO DIOCESAN SCHOOL. A very successful and pleasant afternoon was spent by many people at the annual garden party of the Waikato Diocesan School on Saturday. Rain threatened during the day but fortunately did not fall until the end of tlie afternoon. The headmistress, Miss E. R. Edwards, received the visitors, wearing a frock of cherry and nut brown figured georgette, worn with a hat to tone. Stalls, displaying every kind of ware, were in the hands of the staff, who made capable and energetic vendors, while the Old Girls of the School also had their stall. Novel competitions of every description provided popular entertainment, and tea was served in a quiet part of the grounds, under the trees. A very attractive and pleasing part of the afternoon was the representation of “The Story of Apollo,” danced by a number of the girls. Under the tuition of Miss J. Adams, the physical instructress, the girls gave a display of great artistry, and the green lawn under tlie tail spreading trees made an ideal setting. Tlie following were tlie characters: Daphne. Gloria Machin; Apollo, Jocelyn Milroy: the Tree God, Keitha Kendrick; Cupid, Audrey Morrison; and Pan, Shepherds ami Maidens. Special praise must be given lo the delightful effect gained through the attractive costumes worn by the dancers..

To close Ihe afternoon, the following programme, was rendered in Die School Hall. Ihe accompaniments being played by Miss Ada Necker:— Songs: “Likes and Dislikes"; “Chris-lmas Song”; “Will You Walk.” Piano Group: “Fairies’ Dance," by Barbara Levicn; "Waltz,” by Jean Livingstone; “Morning,” by Shirley Payze; “Banbury Gross,” by Natalie Hooker; “Elfin Dance," by Sheila Smith. Carol: “Shepherd's Song.” Vocal Duets: “May Day” and “Evening," by Joan Turner and Lucille Maning (with violin obligato by Miss G. Clayton-Greene). Piano Group: “Le Sapin,” by Aubrey McNeill; “Impromptu,” by Joan Turner; “Waltz,” by Lucille Manlng. AT PARANA PARK. A most successful garden party, arranged by the ladies of the St. Paul’s Methodist 'Church, -was held at Parana Park. Favoured with ideal weather, there was a very large attendance and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. In declaring the garden parly open ■[he rev. W. 11. Hocking apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Dr. F. D. Pinfold), lie extended a hearty welcome to the large number present and eulogised [he splendid organising work of the ladies of the church-under the capable direction of Mrs D. Bradley, president of the Ladies’ Guild. During the afternoon a number of interesting competitions were held ami these were interspersed with some dozen folk dances, -contributed by members of the recently-formed folk-dancing class, under the leadership of Miss Mcthven, of Gambridge. The dances, performed with grace and precision, amid surroundings of great beauty, delighted the gathering. The various stall-holders were as follows: Cake stall.' Mcsdames \V. A. Smith, \Y. 11. Strong and Bible Class girls; jumble stall, Mrs Walker; competitions, Mcsdames Turbott and llodgkinson ami Messrs K. J. Davcy and W. A. Smilh.
