CHEAPER TELEPHONES.

PROPOSALS IN BRITAIN. MORE EFFICIENT SERVICE. The London Daily Mail understands that Mr Harold Whitehead, the business consultant who was appointed last year by the Postmaster-General to devise a plan for increasing efficiency in the Telephone Sales Department, has now presented his report. Drastic reorganisation of the department Is to lake place at once on lines proposed by Mr Whitehead. His scheme includes a sales organisation on commercial lines. The subscriber, it is hoped, will feel the effect of the reorganisation almost immediately. Cheaper telephone rates will come, and there is also to be a system for maintaining efficient service. At present if any fault occurs it is left to the subscriber to make a complaint, and in some cases there Is considerable delay before the defect is righted 'The new scheme provides for a "service alter installation,” on the lines adopted by many great commercial undertakings, who send representatives to make regular tests and adjustments of whatever equipment they have supplied. The telephone subscriber will therefore have a better guarantee in Lhe future of ellloient service. 18,000 Telegrams. Eighteen thousand householders will receive unexpected telegrams, and on opening lhe buff envelope will read: ‘M cordially invite you lo become a ! telephone subscriber now, so that you ! may enjoy the advantages and comforts of telephone service during the coming winter. —Kingsley Wood, Post-master-General." A Post Office official said that this was part ol' Lhe big telephone publicity drive. "The names of those who will receive telegrams," he said, "were selected all over the country by local post Office offcials, who choso likely telephone subscribers.”
