Arawa Rose and Echo Song left a field of nine runners to contest the Spring Hack Handicap. in which the second fancied Gay Marigold scored comfortably by a length from Royal Gallant with Curra.iong a neck away and Valpai at the head of the others. Antique. Sneedmint, Eager Rose and Helium declined their engagements in the Alison Cup. The outsider. Maori Boy. registered a su-prisc victory in record time, and returned liis supporters a double figure dividend. Three furlongs from home Prolyxo and Lueidus were together in front, this pair showing the way into the straight to Whakapara, Mungatoon, Imamint, King’s Knave and Glenvane. The race resulted in a dead-heat between Whakapara and King’s Knave, with Prolyxo three-quarters of a length away. Glenvane was fourth, followed by Imamint. At a meeting of Hie executive committee of ‘the Opoiiki Jockey Club, it was decided to recommend that, in order to assist owners and encourage nominations, the nomination fees for the. next race meeting lie reduced, subject to tho approval of the Racing Conference. The committee also decided to adhere to the old system of paying totalizator dividends. Subject to the approval of the Waircka Domain Board, a reduction will be made in gate charges. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. RESULT OF A PROTEST. N.Z. HORSE PLACED SECOND. SYDNEY, Nov, 27. The New Zealand gelding Lavington, owned and trained by JL B Lorigan, Unbilled 'first in the Ashbury Handicap, one mile one furlong, at Canterbury Park yesterday, but as the result of a protest was placed second. The race was awarded to Sorvius, 8.3 (Douglas), who finished a length behind Lavington, 8.6 (D. Munro), with Gesto, 8.11 (Nowland)- two lengths away third. Eleven started. Time, 1.56.
