The spring meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club was opened to-day in fine weather- before a good attendance. The course was in ideal order. Following are the results:—■ MELROSE MAIDEN HANDICAP. The Te Rapa owned and trained Kahau was most in demand with £32S from Schizanthus (£226) and Roman Mascot (£186), Blanford being sixth in demand with £SO 10s. Kahau was quickly in charge from Reviver, Schizanthus, British Columbia, Roman Mascot, Trickle, Lady Carrington, Blanford, Courthaven and Hispania. There was little change across the top. At the straight entrance Kahau, Reviver and Roman Mascot were practically on terms in front of Schizanthus, British Columbia, Trickle and Blanford. Blanford won by a length and a-half from Roman Mascot, who beat British Columbia by a neck. Bright Flower was fourth, followed by Laudatory, Muskon, Tahae Mea, Lady Carrington and Musgo. Time, 1.9 1-5. The winner, who was not too well placed early made up his ground steadily, and his finishing run was too solid for the opposition. Roman Mascot and British Columbia made good efforts, while Bright Flower was finishing on well, as also were Laudatory and Muskon. Kahau, Reviver and Schizanthus were finished with soon after entering the straight. CHELTENHAM HANDICAP. Of £150; 6 furlongs. 1 LADY QUEX, Mr W. G. Lady Quex (£467), High Comedy (£405) and Exaggeration (£306) were the best supported.

Faganelli and Exaggeration were soon out making the pace with Lady Quex, High Comedy and Huntingdon racing on terms and Marechal last. Across the top Paganelli was just clear of Exaggeration and then came Huntingdon and Lady Quex. Paganelli and Exaggeration were the first into the straight from Lady Quex, Marechal and Huntingdon. Lady Quex won by a neck from Exaggeration, who was a head in front of Paganelli. Marechal was fourth and Huntingdon next. Time, 1.14. Lady Quex was nicely handled and finished on well. Exaggeration ran a good race under a handy weight, but Paganelli’s impost told in the end. Huntingdon and Marechal were never dangerous. High Comedy Dies.

While crossing the top High Comedy fell, and died, the horse having burst a blood vessel. High Comedy was a four-year-old gelding by Leighton—Comedienne and was owned by Mr R. T. Reid, of Hamilton, and trained at Takanini by P. E. Pope. He was a useful stake earner, his most important victory being the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. SPRING HACK HANDICAP. Merry Lap (£568) was favourite, with £543 for Gay Marigold and £474 for Karangapai, the next best supported. Royal Gallant was fifth in request with £231. Currajong led along the back with Gay Marigold. Royal Gallant, Princess Star, Lord Willonyx, Merry Lap and Yalpai in that order. Three furlongs from home Currajong, Gay Marigold and Princess Star were on terms in front of Yalpai, with Merry Lap and Royal Gallant Ihe handiest, of Hie otliors. Gay Marigold and Gnrnjong showed the way into the straight, to Princess Star, Royal Gallant an 1 Yaipai. Gav Marigold won by a length from Royal Gallant, who was a neck in front of Currajong. Yalpai was fourth, followed by Lord Willonyx, Karangapai. Merry Lap, Princess Star and Ruby Dawn. Time, 1.15. This was Ihe winner’s third success on end. Her comfortable margin today ensures her prospects being still favourable. Royal Gallant ran a good race, while Currajong was in the picture from ‘barrier rise. Yalpai’s effort was of a useful order, but Merry

Lap failed to finish on as well as was expected. Karangapai missed the jump-out and was required to cover extra ground as a result.

Maori Boy showed the way into the straight to Great Emblem, Refresher and Tarporley, with Royal Artist at the head of the others. Maori Boy scored by a neck from Tarporley, with Gay Idea a similar distance further off. Royal Artist was fourth and then came Refresher, Great Emblem, Teels, Alloy, Volimond, and Gay Cockade. Tarporley, after a slow beginning, finished on particularly well. Gay Idea came from a long way back. Royal Artist was always fairly well placed.
