CHILD DROWNED. ROTORUA, Thursday. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. S. I-leywood, of Ngakura, wandered from Its home and fell into a creek, and was drowned. CAR OVER BANK. OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE. MARTON, Thursday. A motor-car, driven by Mrs. W. Briton, of Talhape, and with Mrs. Robert Lilburn, of Wanganui, and child as passengers, went over a bank when endeavouring to pass a lorry. The motor-car landed on its hood, imprisoning the occupants, who were severely shaken and received cuts and bruises. BITTEN BY SHARK. WHITIANGA, Thursday. While fishing with his son Edward, aged 14, a Mercury Bay fisherman, Mr. Clifton Turner, hooked a Mako shark about 10ft. long. When he attempted to gaff it the shark snapped and caught two of Mr. Turner’s fingers. STRUCK BY HAMMER. A PECULIAR ACCIDENT. NAPIER, Thursday. Severe head injuries were received by a 14-year-old boy, Gavin Stuart, this evening when he was struck on the side of the head by a hammer, which had been thrown by an athlete named Campbell, who was practising at the conclusion of the Napier Athletic Club’s meeting. As Campbell was about to throw the hammer he either slipped or the hammer left in a direction he did not anticipate, and went toward two boys who were sitting on a fence some distance away. Both boys were knocked from the fence. Stuart was struck on the side of the head, while the other boy was struck only by the chain and soon recovered. BOY CYCLIST HURT. AUCKLAND, Friday. After returning to his home, suffering from head injuries received in a collision between his cycle and a motor-truck, Arthur Benjamin Berryman, aged 15, collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital.
