SETTLED OUT OF COURT.
CAPTAIN DE GROOT’S CLAIM. TERMS NOT DISCLOSED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlgrnt. SYDNEY, Nov. 17. The claim for £SOOO damages brought by Captain P. E. de Groot against Mr. Mark Gosling, formerly Chief Secretary in the Lang Government, Mr. Walter Childs, Chief Police Commissioner, and Mr. William Mackay, Metropolitan Police Superintendent, has been settled out of court. The terms are not likely to be disclosed. The claim arose out of the ribboncutting incident at the opening of the Sydney harbour bridge on March 19. Captain de Groot alleged that he was wrongfully arrested and imprisoned. In the Sydney Supreme Court on August 31 the action was begun in which Captain de Groot claimed £SOOO from Air. Gosling, Mr. Childs and Mr. Mackay. Captain de Groot, riding behind a troop of light horsemen, galloped up to the ribbon on the harbour bridge at the opening ceremony and severed it with his sword. Captain de Groot was dragged off ilis horse and placed under arrest. Captain de Groot, was brought before the Lunacy Court*; and discharged on March 21. He was’rearrested and charged with maliciously damaging the bridge ribbon, valued at £2, with offensive behaviour and with using threatening language to Inspector Robson. He was fined £5 on the charge of offensive behaviour.
