BRIGHTENING CAMP LIFE. WORK OF ASSOCIATION. ACTIVE BODY IN HAMILTON. An indication of the useful work which the Hamilton branch of the New Zealand Territorial Association It doing in providing sooial and facilities for the men of the First Battalion, Waikato Regiment, Is S lve °L la the annual report of the branch. The Hamilton branch of the New Zealand Territorial Association was formed on October 22, 1931, following a well attended publio meeting called for the purpose, states the report. Colonel Dulgan,’of Auckland, addressed those present on the objects of the association. Several other speakers followed Colonel Dulgan, the outcome of which was the passing of a resolution forming a branch and the election of officers for the ensuing year. During January 1932, the executive met to consider means\ of assisting the First Battalion, Waikato Regiment. Arrangements were made to carry out a comprehensive programme for the benefit of .the battalion which was encamped on the Claudelands showgrounds. The main functions of this programme were the recreational and entertainment side of camp life. Arrangements were made for the free use of the municipal baths daily during the camping period. A series 'of short lectures were given during Hie daytime on subjects of interest to the trainees and were greatly appreciated.

Theatre Companies’ Assistance. Local picture theatre companies very generously assisted in the work of the association by means of a substantial reduction in admittance charges of which fullest advantage was taken by all ranks. Reading and writing rooms were provided in conjunction with the Y.M.C.A., together with a marquee for indoor sports and in this connection the welfare of the regiment was well looked after. These marquees were fitted out with electric light, and proved a very popular part of camp life. A first class concert was organised by Mrs H. C. Ross, and staged In the main dining hall. This was an outstanding success, some of the Items being encored as many as five times. Organised sports were held, members of the executive undertaking to canvass local tradespeople, 'and other sympathisers with a view to raising sufficient prizes. So successful were their efforts that first, second and third prizes were awarded for eaoli event, with a gold medal for the best individual performance. Members of the executive visited the camp periodically and were of the greatest assistance to the regiment In furthering the welfare of the troops. After t'he camp a most appreciative letter waa received from the adjutant of the regiment. ( Interest Keenly Appreciated. Members of the executive attended the official opening of the Regimental Club, and also attended parades of the unit in Hamilton. This interest in the regiment was very keenly appreciated by all concerned. A sub-committee was set up Jto raise funds for the provision of sports gear. As a result a full badminton set was presented t» the local training centre. This haa proved to be particularly popular and is in almost daily use.

The membership of t'he association Is very small, standing at 34—It is hoped that each member will indues others to join with the object of securing a membership in keeping . witi our progressive town.
