FALSE PRETENCES.
WOMAN FOUND GUILTY. SENT TO PRISON. AUCKLAND, Thursday. In the Police Court yesterday, Mary Augusta Hodson, agde 50, domestic, was charged with obtaining, on September 10, 25s from G. MoWilllam, by falsely representing that she was “Mrs. M. A. Beale," or Awanul North; with obtaining on September 30 from Dr. T. G. de Clive Lowe, 4s by falesly representing she was " Mrs. Alack,” of Ngatea; with obtaining, on October 7, from L. M. Horrocks, £1 14s by falsely representing she was “ Mrs. J. W. Beale," of llaurald Plains; and with obtaining, on October 17, £4 from F. W. Stone, Tv falsely representing that she was * “ Mrs. Beale," of Awanui North. In all the cases she claimed to have lost a crossed cheque for £45. She pleaded guilty to all charges.. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused had gone to Mr. McWilllam, an eve specialist, and had asked to have her eyes tested for glasses. She said thal she had no ready money, as she had lost a crossed cheque. At her suggestion Mr. McWHUam loaned her 255. A similar slory had been [old to Dr. de Clive Lowe. Later ihe doctor discovered that the woman's story was untrue, and the police, who were informed, found her in a Davenport hotel, drinking with a man, presumably with the money she bad secured from Dr. de Clive Lowe. From Horrocks she had ordered false teeth, and to Mr. Slone, who represented an engineering company, accused had said she wished to purchase a milking plant, and had then told the same story about a lost cheque. Accused was convicted and sentenced la six months- imprisonment on two of Hie charges, and three months on llu; others, ul l souleuecs to be concurrent
