FINLAY CUP. MATAMATA v. PUTARURU. FORMER'S EASY VICTORY. The second game in the Finlay Cup series was played at Matamata on Saturday when the home team outclassed Putaruru in every department. The visitors never looked like holding then own. . . Patterson kicked off for the visitors and from a penalty Carlson put Matamata on attack. The Matamata backs handled well for Jack 'Wilson to score, well out, Carlson s kick did not get the distance. , , A penalty close in against the visitors shortly afterwards was converted by Carlson. The visiting forwards offside gave Carlson another easy shot to increase Matamata’s score, i Ensor found a gap and scored a popular try alongside the posts. Carlson goaled. Allwood drove Matamata back past half-way and a penalty to Putaruru was taken by Patterson, but his kick fell short. , Play went back to the Putaruru line and Carlson had a drop but no goal was allowed. Inman broke away, Ensor and Carroll joining in for the last-named to go over. Carlson missed a difficult kick. Ensor scored his second try well out. Carlson converted with a fine kick. The whole back line handled twice, Carlson taking a high pass to score in the other corner and goaled with a‘beauty. Half-time was c-alled with the ■score: Matamata 27, Putaruru 0. The first Incident of note after halftime was a penalty well out but Carlson's shot fell short. A visitor off-side igave Carroll a chance, but his kick went wide. Butt sent out to Inman to Carroll, who cut in well to send Carlson and Stewart away for the latter to score the only decent try of the day. .Carlson missed the kick. Wilson beat Thompson for the bail to send Porterfield over. Carlson missed from the side line. Mati interrupted and scored under the posts. Patterson goaled. Putaruru forwards offside gave Inman a shot, which missed and the visitors forced. Patterson had a shot from a penalty, which /went wide. Wilson kicked across for Carlson to send Stewart over in the corner. Carlson missed. The 'final score was: Matamata 36, Putaruru 5. Mr 11. A. Pirritt, Morrinsville controlled the game. TUI CUP.
