ART UNION DRAWN.

CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. FUNCTION IN WINTER SHOW HALL. FIRST PRIZE TO IvAWHIA. Every seat in the Winter ShowConcert Hall was taken on Saturday night when the Leap Year Gold Nugget Art Union, conducted by the South Auckland Caledonian Society was drawn. Many tickets had been sold in all parts of New Zealand, and keen interest was taken in the drawing of the winning numbers, which was carried out under police supervision. Prior to the commencement of the draw the. proceedings were enlivened hy community singing, led by Mr W. Fenton, while several artists contributed items, and the South Auckland Pipe Band entertained with several selections. Excitement was keen when, shortly after 9 o’clock, the large cylinder containing the butts of the tickets sold was placed In the centre of the stage, with a smaller cylinder beside it from which eight marbles, representing the number of the prizes, were to be drawn. The method of drawing was the same as is usually adopted in such cases. Four scrutineers were elected from the audience. One was deputed to rotate the drum containing the butts, a second took a marble from the small cylinder, while the third man extracted one of the butts from the drum. The other scrutineer attended to the checking of the numbers with Mr P. Watts, the representative of the police. The first marblo drawn was number five, which represented the fifth prize, the only one to go to a Hamilton resident. Marble number one was fifth to appear and was drawn with the ticket of a resident of Kinohaku, near Kawhia, who thus won the first prize. There was an outburst of applause as each prize winner was anno-unoed, the result in the case of the seoond prize being particularly popular. Every ticket drawn was replaced in the drum after the prize won had been announced, so that the same ticket was given a chance of winning more than one prize. The following was the result of the draw: — First prize (£3O), 4678: Action, ICinohaku, Kawhia, Second prize (£10), 19,959, “No Luck," Blind Institute, Parnell, Auckland.
