NEW ZEALAND BUTTER,

PACKING IN LONDON. SPLENDID NEW PREMISES. (Prom a Correspondent.) LONDON, May 6. To-day I have had .the pleasure, of being shown -over the new premise* that are being built for the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd.,, at Farmers’ Road, Camberwell Mr J. B. Wright, of Empire Dairies, asked me to accompany him this afternooil. This factory is to be used for the. paoking of the weil-known “Anchor" brand of New Zealand butter into ilb, }lb, and ilb pats with the familiar wrapper round them. For convenience In handling the pats are put into very neat 141 b oardboard cartons, and distributed to the retail stores throughout London. - i' Three years ago I was present at the opening of the present premises in Old Thames Street, when a start was made in the wrapping of our butter In the “Anohor” label. Mr Cagne wa« in charge, and from a modest beginning, in which seven or eight girls were employed, the business has so Increased that it has been necessary to build new premises, where a staff of 60 girls will be kept busy. The land Is very conveniently situated, being only about seven or eight minutes by road from Tooley Street, where our butter is landed. The front entrance is on Farmers’ Road, where there Is a frontage of 118 feet. The back entrance is by way of Wareham Road, and there is a publio footway, known as Bath Passage, which runs along the side. The depth of the building on this side is 142 ft 6in. The building is particularly strong, regarding the foundations and supports, so that should It be necessary at any time to add to the building It will be an easy matter to add one or two storeys.

Possession Next Month. The contractor, Mr Pitcher, of Pitcher and Co., builders, showed us over the building, which is well advanced, so that possession will probably be given about the end of July. The ■ floor space is approximately 16,000 feet, and the lay-out is such that there will be a minimum of handling, as the butter, which is received in bulk at the rear entrance, off Wareham Street, passes from there to the defrosting room, from here to the main packing room, thence to the cold storage, ready for distribution, via the front entrance in Farmers’ Road. The main packing room is well lit by lantern lights overhead, and white tiles are used for lining the walls. Ample provision is made for dining facilities for the girl workers and the ofllee staff. The cold store Is capable of accommodating 2000 boxes, but this will not often be tested, as the butter will be sent out as soon as packed, by lorry. The contract price was £13,500, a’ very reasonable figure, considering the strength of the building, also the finish, which is of red brick, corrugated. The land Is splendidly situated, and Mr Wright, on behalf of the company, was very fortunate in getting this section, which is so centrally situated. Advantago to Suppliers. This project by the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Co., Ltd., is one, I am sure, which will be of great advantage to the suppliers, as with this modern factory the company will bo able to place increasing quantities of their well-known brand of butter before the London public.
