Gold Quotation. —The latest price ruling in London for gold was £5 12s 6d an ounce.

Japanese Cruisers Depart. The Japanese cruisers left Wellington at 10 a.m. for Suva.

British Tobacco Dividend. The directors of the British Tobacco Company (Australasia), Ltd., have declared a quarterly dividend' of li per cent. It is at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum, .compared with 8 per cent, for the. year ended October 31, 1931.

Small Holdings Scheme. —The president of the .Royal Agricultural Society, Mr W. Perry, of Penrose, has presented 10 acres of his property to the Government under the small holdings scheme. The scheme has been '• endorsed by the Wairarapa Farmers’ Union.

Failed to Pay Levy. —An enginedriver, Albert Hartwell, was fined 30s and costs In the Onehunga Police Court yesterday for having failed to pay the February instalment of the unemployment levy. It was stated that this was defendant’s second offence. The defendant said he had since made payment.

Desperate Position. —The Red Cross clothing depot in Hastings is to be closed worthwlth for want of clothing •suitable to issue to those -in need, and •the prospects are that no furthclr work of any use will be possible until a large sum of money Is available for the purchase of goods.

Woman Defrauded. —“He absolutely cheated this woman,” said ‘Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., In the Police Court at Auckland yesterday, when William John Brooks, aged 23, was charged with obtaining £35 from Nora Ronayne by a false pretence, and also with •stealing scales valued at £ll, the property of the Auckland Scale Company, Limited. Accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. •

London Food Exhibition. —The New Zealand publicity officer, Mr H. T. B. Drew, in the absence of the High Commissioner, Sir Thomas Wili’ord, opened New Zealand’s day at the Nations’ Food Exhibition, arranged by the London Grocers’ Association at Olympia. Mr Drew emphasised that New Zealand was increasing her prestige in Empire trade. Small Holdings. —“ If I were out of business to-morrow, and sometimes 1 wish I were (laughter), I would purchase a five-acre 'Section at Solway and keep pigs," said Mr W. White, a director of the Masterton Y.M.G.A., when speaking to boys on small holdings. Mr White said he had a personal knowledge of the possibilities of small holdings, and he knew many instances in which people so engaged were making a comfortable living.

Dividend of SB Per Cent. —A net profit of £520,038 was earned by Bryant and May, Limited, match manufacturers, for the year ended March 31, 1932. This compares with £530,035 in 1930-31. Ordinary shareholders again are to be paid 25 per cent, dividend, free of English Income tax, the total amount distributed, including preference payments and ■employees’ proportion, being '£458,197. The report says that none of the subsidiary companies made a loss during the year.

Man With a Bomb. —A further remand until Monday was granted when George Sargiff, aged 42, the Russian seaman who was arrested on May 19, appeared in the Auckland Police Court yesterday. Accused was charged with knowingly having in his possession a bomb, with intent to commit a crime, and also with procuring explosives without lawful right.

Missing Man Found. —A farmer, Mr Herbert Hall, who had been reported missing from Te Awamutu since May 19, and had not been heard of since then by his family, who reside in the Te Tahi district, has been located in the Waikato Hospital, where he has been under treatment since the date mentioned. He had come back from Palmerston North after a stay there of some weeks, to recuperate, and soon aitej; his return to Te Awamutu consulted a local doctor, and the latter arranged for Ills admission to the Waikato Hospital. A message to his family miscarried.

Reduction In Members The question of a reduction of the number of members of Parliament was discussed by Hie council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday, when a letter was received from the Prime Minister, the Right Ron. G. W. Forbes, saying he would be glad to consider the Chamber’s- suggestion that the number of members should be re duced. A letter was received also from the Dunedin Chamber, saying it agreed with the general principle of a -reduction. It was decided to inform the Dunedin Chamber that the Auckland Chamber tentatively suggested a reduction by half, to be effected by the representation commissioners in such a way as not to disturb the- country quota. Mr-A. G. Lunn said the matter was one they should steadily pursue.
