MATANGI.

Missionary Meeting. There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Matangi branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, which was held at Mrs Buckingham’s residence. Mrs T. Thompson presided. Regfet was expressed at Rev J. Hay’s departure from Cambridge. Mrs Cameron reported that two bags of clothing had been sent to Sister Dorothy at Te Whaiti 'Maori mission station.

Intimations from the British and Foreign Bible Society’s secretary, referring to the stall at the Winter Show, also to the Day of Prayer,, which is to be held at the Y.M.C.A. rooms, Hamilton, on May 25, were received.

Mrs Thompson read an interesting article on the women of India.

TAUHEI.

Hall Sooiety. At the annual meeting of the Tauhei Hall Society there was a fair attendance of members. The president (Mr J. Nobler congratulated members on the satisfactory state of the hall's financial position, the hooks showing a credit balance of £lO, which the speaker considered very good considering the hard times the settlers were going through. lie thanked the member? of the committee, making special reference to the good work of the hon. secretary, Mr J. Reynal and Mr C. Ward, who acted as caretaker. The amusement com-, mittee were also warmly thanked for their efforts to obtain funds by dances, eto.

The following officers were elected; — Mr J. Noble, president; Mr W. Best, vice-president; Mr J. Reynal, secretary; committee, Messrs-J. Findlay, junr., P. Clark, V. Brunt and I. B. Harris; auditor, Mr V Arnold, caretaker, Mr Ward. •Mr Arnold, who has charge of the Hall Library, reported the subscribers had dwindled a hit, but there was a small balance in hand. There were 600 volumes in the library at present. Mr Arnold was elected secretary and treasurer and Messrs V. Brunt and 11. J. Valintine as selection committee.

Tolephonos. At the annual meeting of the Tuuhei Hall Society the following resolution was passed unanimously:—“That the Government lie asked to reduce the telephone rentals to subscribers.’’ Several speakers reported that a great, many subscribers had given up the telephones, finding that the times were too hard. It was mentioned that shout 100 had gone off the Alorrinrvjlle exchange, and if this could he avoided by reducing the cost the. would not bo a loser in he long run.

MATAMATA

Caledonian Society. There was a good attendance at the Caledonian Society monthly social. Dancing and cards supplied the main Hems of the evenings’s enjoyment. Mrs L. Lilly and Mr Gibson contributed songs and the music was supplied by -Miss Brenner, Messrs Price, Dobson and Mclsaacs. During the supper adjournment the chief, Mr F. Banks, ■took the opportunity of bidding goodbye to Mr and Mrs W. L. Pirio and Miss Bremner and on behalf of the members presented Mr and Mrs- Pirie with an oak tray and Miss Bremner with a piece of Indian ware. The chief mentioned that Mr Pirie was the founder of the Society and as social secretary he -had been Indefatigable. The services of .Miss Bremner at the piano would he sadly missed. Mr Pirie replied suitably.

TE KUITI. Series of Frosts. A serle? of frosty nights, with sunny days, has been experienced during the week. Clothes Drive. The clothes drive organised by the -Girl Guides for the single men’s camp at Waitomo proved a great success. Footballers Ordered Off. Two players in the Rugby competitions under the Maniapoto sub-Union, who were recently ordered off the field, were dealt with at a meeting of the Union. One was stood down for one playing Saturday, and the other, a younger player, was admonished by the president. Druids’ Lodge. At the lodge room of the Druids’ Order Bro. \V. Swift was Installed as District President for No. 26 district. Bro. Fry, past District President, was •the installing officer, assisted by Bro. R. Schumacher.

TE KOWHAI. Farming Matters. The heavy frosts have checked the fine growth of grass of the early part of the month, and winter conditions are at hand. Feeding out of hay and ensilage Is not yet general, but is due. Hall Commltteo. At the’annual meeting of the Hall Gommitt.ee a satisfactory position was disclosed. Tim outgoing committee wore re-elec,led. with the exception of Mr C. A. Magner, whoso place is nilcd by Mr C. Nieol. A working parly of upwards of twenty men cleared the weeds from the environs of the hall. Study Group Formod. A group class for the study of “The New Keonomies,’’ is holding lectures ami discussions in I lie schoolroom. Mr G. A. Magner has been appointed class leader and some ten local fanners have joined.

KAIPAKI.

Church Service. A good congregation attended the monthly Methodist service on Sunday evening. Mr Vinall, of Leamington, preached, and Miss Scott presided at the organ. Ping Pong Club. The Ping Pong Club met on, Tuesday, a good number being present. The doubles handicap tournament was won by Miss E. Speake and Mr A. Kivell. Supper was served by the ladies. Women’s Instltuto. Owing to the proximity of the Waikato Winter Show, the monthly meeting will be held next Wednesday, when members are asked to bring in as many as possible of their exhibits for the Women's Institute • court at the Show. On tho Farms, The milk supply Is keeping up well, and a good many farmers are still milking twloe a day. The work of top-dressing is going -on, and a good production in spring is anticipated.

TE AROHA. Distress Relief. The local Relief Committee have Organised a footpath shop in Whitaker ■Street for Saturdays. So far the response by .way of donations -has been satisfactory, and the gifts have been very carefully distributed by the committee, after full Investigation. A drive has been arranged for May 25.

Chamber of Commerce.

The president, Mr H. H. Wood, presided at the monthly meeting. It was decided to assist the Relief Committee in connection with tho drive and entertainments now being organised. A resolution was passed “That this meeting protests against the continuance of tho stand down week for relief workers in tho country districts."

■Mr L. Thornton gave an address on tho economlo position, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

Unemployment, Mr A. L, Willis presided at the weekly meeting of the local Unemployment Committee. The estimate under Scheme No. 5 for the week ending May 21 was approved. It provided for 102 men at a cost -of £l7B 10s Gd. Messrs H. H. Wood and W. C. Kennedy were appointed to accompany tho Mayor (Mr R. Coulter) to a conference of local bodies at Paeroa, to discuss tho present position in regard to Scheme No. 5, and to enter a very emphatlo protest to the Minister -of Unemployment against tho delay in abolishing I lie stand down week, also to urge that the present weekly allocations be substantially Increased. Plunkot Socloty. At the monthly meeting of the Plunket. Society Iho nurse's report for April slated: Attendance at rooms numbered, adults 228, babies 207> older children 20, new eases 7. Valedictory Function. Residents -of Ngarua attended in large numbers on Ihe occasion of a public farewell tendered to Mr and Air? Lipanovieh, of Diagonal lload, who are leaving the district to reside at. Mangerc. The presentation of a travelling rug to Mrs Lipanovieh, who had resided at Ngarua for 25 years, wa; made by Mr Hayward, on behalf of the settlers.

TE PUNINGA.

Milk Supply Keeping Up. Although the Dairy Company’s season finishes at the end of May enough milk Is coming into the Te Punlnga cheese factory to fill three of the six vats dally. The factory Is still making about 35 cheeses a day, so that there will not be muoh of a slack period before the new cows start oomlng in. The March herd-testing returns show that the Te Puninga group’s I*slo cows averaged 543 pounds of milk and 26.66 pounds of fat, while Ngarua, Te Puninga’s chief rival, averaged 520 pounds of milk and 27.50 pounds of fat, its cows having a 5.2 test, compared with Te Puninga’s 4.9.

The average for the Herd-testing Association was only 21.46 pounds of fat.

Popular Residents Leaving.

After residing at Te Puninga for four years Mr and Mrs W. J. Dakers and family'are leaving in June, to take unp -a farm at Waimauku, north of Auckland.

Mr Dakers has been manager of Mr J. ,T. Patterson’s property at Te Puninga since dairying was started on the block.

Air and Mrs Dakers have taken a leading part In all the social activities •of the district, and their many friends will regret their departure.

OTOROHANGA

Waitomo Power Board. At i/he annual meeting of the Waitomo Electric Power Board, Mr W. A. Lee was re-elected chairman. The chairman’s report -disclosed a profit of £2310 for the year. The accumulated losses of two years ago, amounting to £3361, are now nearly wiped out, £1074 being written off last year, and with the present profits the old deficit now stands at £156. The year’s operations were the most successful since the institution of the Board.

Dental Clinic Committee. At a speoial meeting of the Dental Clinic it was arranged that the following form the committee: —Alesdames Buokland, Blomfleld and Stanley, Nurse Gorrie, Messrs 11. W. Atkinson, A. E. Trott, 11. G. Corbett, G. Farmer, W. F. Walters, Hotsori and Captain Stanley. Heavy Frosts. Heavy white frosts have been general eacli night tills week.
