RAID ON A STORE.
prosecutions at huntly. remanded for a week. HUNTLY, Friday. Police spent a busy time this morning rounding up men who Avere al " leged to have been involved in the raid on the Farmers' Trading Company s store at Huntly yesterday. Besides the eight men arrested last evening 14 were taken into custody to-day. At the Waahi pa five Maori youths were arrested. The elders of the tribe expressed strong disapproval of the action of the natives involved and remonstrated with them. A special Court was opened this afternoon and the 14 men arrested to-day were formally charged. A large crowd, including the wives and children of some of the accused, stood outside the courthouse. They were not, admitted to the Court. Messrs W. Barclay and W. C. E. George, J.’sP. were on the Bench.
Tho Charges. James Sterling, aged 35, a native of Scotland, was charged with inciting and encouraging lawlessness and with the theft of groceries valued at £lO. The following were charged with the theft of groceries:—Sutherland Peden, aged 23, Scotland; Henry Fehsenfeld, aged 25, New Zealand; John Scott Moodie, aged 27, Scotland; Evan David Davies, aged 25, Wales; Idris Davies, aged 22, Wales; Robert Kaweroa, aged 23, New Zealand; Heta Tarawhiti; aged 24, New Zealand; Peter Raumati, aged 24, New Zealand; Gray Garena, aged 21, New Zealand; Joseph Berryman, -aged 21, New Zealand; Talk! Whiu, aged 20, New Zealand; Edward Green, aged 30, Wales; Brynley Kinson, aged 43, Wales. All the accused were remanded to appear at Huntly next Friday morning. They were admitted to bail of £2OO each.
No difficulty was experienced in finding bail for all of them.
