Statesman was gelded subsequent to winning a Melbourne Cup, and In England the same course was adopted with Brienz (Blink —Blue Lake), who ran third in the 1929 Derby won by Trigo. Brienz had a long absence from racing after the operation, and on his return was put to hurdling, graduating from that to steeplechasing. He has done rather well at the latter branch of sport. At Manchester on March 27 he won the Five Hundred Steeplechase with li.il, and as he started at 8 to J, lie also gave his owner a nice return in bets.
