Great Pianist in New Zealand. Benno Moiseiwitsch, the great pianist, opened a New Zealand tour at Wellington on Thursday night. He received a great reception from a huge audience. The programme was as follows: Prelude and Fugue in D Major Bach-Busoni); Sonata Appassionata, Op. 57, in F Minor (Beethoven); Scherzo in C Sharp Minor (Chopin) ; Valse in F Flat Major (Chopin) ; Valso in G Flat Major (Chopin); Nocturne in D Flat Major (Chopin); Scherzo in B Minor (Chopin); Etude in F minor (Liszt) ; Overture Tannhauscr (Wag-ncr-Liszt).

Hamilton Music Students. The Hamilton Music Students’ Association will give a “French Evening” on Monday, May 30. An interesting programme is being arranged, a special feature being the introduction of two-piano work. Grand Opera In Sydnoy. This week’s productions by the Williamson Grand Opera Company in Sydney wove “Carmen," “Barber of Seville," “11 Trovatore,” “Aida,” and "Faust,”

Proposed National Orchestra. The Federal Postmaster-General said in Hie House of Representatives at Canberra that lie would endeavour to get in touch with Mr Henri Ycrbrugglien, with a view to conferring with him on the possibility of establishing a national orchestra for broadcasting.

Chaliapin to Receive £25,000. The great Russian operatic basso, Feodor Chaliapin, is to appear in a British version of the opera, “Don Quixote.” He is to receive £lo,ooo.before the picture starts, with another £15,000 afterwards and a percentage of the profits. Recital of British Music. An interesting recital of British music will he given by Mr E. 11. Apthorp in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Monday. Mrs lan Stuart will sing numbers from Elgar’s "Sea Pictures," while Mr J. T. Battersby will be heard in “Ah, Moon of My Delight" from Liza Lehmann’s song cycle, “In a Persian Garden.” The organ works to he played by Mr Apthorp, include the tone poem, “The Sea" (Arnold-Smith), “Song of Sunshine" (Hollius), Pomp and Circumstance March (Elgar), First Sonata (Harwood), and the Prelude and "Angel’s Farewell" from the oratorio, “The Dream of Gerontius" (Elgar). “Faust” at Wellington. The Royal Wellington Choral Union, now in its 28th year of existence, maintains a solid reputation for the excellence of its work. The first ‘performance of the 1932 season, Gounod’s grand opera, “Faust," will take place on May 28, under Hie direction of Mr John Bishop, with a chorus and orchestra of 230 per formers. The cast of soloists is as follows: — Faust, Mr Alfred Walrnslcy, Dunedin; Margarita, Miss 'Teresa McEnroe; Valentine, Mr W. B. Brough, Auckland; Siobcl, Miss Molly Atkinson, Auckland; and Mephistoplieles, Mr Harison Cook. 'The programme for the remainder of the season will bo selected from “Hiawatha," in costume, “Creation," “Lucia di Lainmermoor,” “Macitana," and “The Messiah." Musical Moments. Hubert Carter, the well-known tenor, and his pupils gave a programme before members of Hie Canterbury Women's Club at Christchurch recently. Mr Carter sang "To One Who Passed Whistling Through the Night" (Armstrong Gibbs) and “Licbcstraum" (Liszt), and also took the tenor solos in excerpts from “Bigolollu," “La Bohcme," “II Trovatore" and “L’Enfant Procliguc."

Paul Vi nograd off, the Russian pianist, gave an all-Chopin recital at Wellington last week.
