The party whips summoned every member of the Dail for the final stages of the Oath Removal Bill. The chief points of interest were Mr Patrick McGilligan’s (an ex-Min-ister) amendment aiming to maintain the treaty as a superior instrument, whether members take the oath or not, and an amendment moved by Mr Finlay (a supporter of Mr Cosgrave), in favour of preserving the treaty and particularly its application to the compensation of public servants. Mr Norton (Labour leader) declared that 'the amendments were more to put Labour members in difllry culties than to savo the treaty. Labour did not believe that the abolition of the oath would be an infraction of the treaty. The amendments were defeated by 77 voles to 09, and the bill was passed by the same majority. It will be submitted to the senate on Wednesday next, 25th inst.
