BANK MANAGER FAREWELLED. TRIBUTES TO MR HOGBEN. Mr L. W. Hogben, manager of thu Hamilton branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia for the past seven Tears, was tendered a farewell presentation at a gathering arranged in his honour at Almadale Private Hotel yesterday afternoon. Mr J. R. Fow, in making a presentation of a handsome silver tea and coffee service, paid a tribute to the high standing of their guest in his business associations of the town. General regret was felt at Mr Hogben's departure to Wanganui. Their guest had come to Hamilton at a time of financial stringency, and it was a tribute to his ability as a man and banker that he had earned the esteem of those whom he had met in a business capacity. Mr Fow assured Mr Hogben that he was leaving Hamilton with the good wishes of a wide circle of friends.

Mr Hogben, in returning thanks, said that his stay in Hamilton had been a very pleasant one. Hamilton, he said, had a great future, and he was leaving it with considerable regret. He hoped that the same courtesy extended to him would be given his successor, Mr Trevena.

In welcoming Mr E. P. J. Trevena, the new' manager, -Mr S. C. G. Lye expressed the hope that he would merit the esteem of clients to the same extent that Mr Hogben had done. Tho speaker joined with Mr Fow in regret at their guest’s departure from Hamilton.

Mr Trevena thanked the gathering for the kindly wishes expressed and congratulated Mr Hogben in his advancement in the service. He had realised, he said, that when he left Nelson, after some six years’ residence there, that he was coming to a land full of promise. He assured the gathering that he would always do his best to uphold the dignity of the institution which he had the honour to represent, and pointed out that *o make a success of anything co-opera-tion was an essential factor. They were facing a period of readjustment, and they should see that principles of sound finance were not departed from. Despite all the criticism hurled at the banks, Mr Trevena was of opinion that were It not for the conservative policy adopted by the banxs New Zealand and other parts of the British Empire could not have kept their credits as good as they were at the present time. The gathering joined in cheers for Mr and Mrs Hogben. A vote of thanks to Mr A. Mcßae for co-operating so generously in contributing to the success of the function was passed.
