OTTAWA POLICY.
DESIRES OF FARMERS. REDUCTION OF DUTIES. (Special Reporter.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Ten remits dealing with the Ottawa Conference and mostly urging adequate representation of the primary industries on the New Zealand delegation were before the Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Union Conference today. A sub-committee succeeded m condensing the remits into one resolution, as follows: —
“ That the interests of exporting primary producers are the basis of the prosperity of New Zealand, and that therefore Government delegates to Ottawa Conference should be men in full sympathy with the movement for free trade with Britain and under Government instructions to work for an all-round reduction of protective duties within the Empire, and that the question of currency and exchange should be discussed.” It was resolved to telegraph the remit to Cabinet Ministers dealing with the New Zealand delegation. The Quota System. A further resolution was moved that the quota system would spell disaster if adopted by the Ottawa Conference. Mr 11. M. Rushworlh, M.P., reminded the conference that the arrangements regarding preference to New Zealand dairy produce applied only until November 15. At Ottawa a reorientation would take place. It was clearly indicated that unless New Zealand would give preference to British goods duties would be placed against New Zealand exports. On the motion of Mr W. Boyd (Matangi) it was resolved that the question be referred to the incoming executive.
