MATAMATA v. WARDVILLE

The second meeting of Matamata and Wardville teams created surprise, as in the first round the local team put up a cricket score. Heartened by the inclusion of Porterfield and Smith the Wardville forwards made the pace a cracker from the whistle, and getting the required assistance from their backs the country team had the better of the exchanges right through to win by six to .three. Wardville were also unfortunate in that Carroll went over close to the post's, hut the referee not being in a posilion to see the incident the possibilities are that five points were lost. The referee was especially severe on the scrummagcrs, and an uplifted foot or a man off-side received no quarter. The Wardville pack were penalised a good deal in the first, ha if, and if W. Carlson had had ids kicking boot with him the result might have been different. Roth teams had several juniors playing, and though it was their second game they all gave a good account of themselves.

Comments on Players. For Wardville, Porterfield at once showed himself a good forward, ami when lie gets into condition should lie an asset to the Matamala representative pack. Smith is Hie fastest forward in the union, ami it is a pity that there is not somebody to go with the Wardville man. J. Sharp is right up to last year's form, ami it is to he hoped lie will he available for all representative matches. Solomon at liaif was Hie host hack on Iho ground, anil is rapidly following in ids brother’s, Hie Auckland representative, footsteps. Wilson played first live-eighths, and Is coining hack io form. W. Cntyoll anil Woodrool'o were rather disappointing. Knowles, a junior, played a fine game at fullback. The Malamala pack held llieir own, and if was not llieir fault that Hie team was beaten. Howard, Malligan. Storey and While were toilers all Hie way. Sutherland, at half, sent mil all rigid when lie got Hie opportunity. \V. Carlson, at first live-eighth, is handling better Ilian he did last year, lie appeared to have no eontlilence ill the men behind him. and tried to break through on his own all the lime. ,\ first five-eighth's duty is to keep lbother man guessing, lie should mix ids play all the time. Lowry on the wing was (lastly, and should have had more opportunities. (Continued iu next column.!
