RETURNS FOR THE YEAR. WELLINGTON, Monday. The accounts of the Railways Department, covering operations during the year ended March 31, concerning which an advance statement was made on April 20, appear in the latest Gazette. As previously indicated, they show a net revenue of £837,993, as against an estimate in last year's Budget of £930,000. Following Is a comparison of the accounts for the last two years showing the results of railway operation in the two Islands and aggregate transactions in respect of other services:

Miscellaneous revenue, which is not particularised, amounted last' year to £354,345, a doorcase of £10,508. Expenses of the Lake Wakatlpu steamer services exceeded revenue by £2055, as against £4898 in the previous year. Gross revenue from refreshment rooms, advertising, road motors and oilier services was £218,900, a decrease of £74,974, while the expenditure was £209,260, or £74,932 less Ilian in the previous year. Bents from departmental dwellings amounted to £138,725, an increase of £22,409, while the expenditure was £149,974, a reduction of £28,430.
