THE 1932 TILT.
GAY NEW DANCE. (By Lady Patricia Ward.) LONDON, March 14. A new and spirited dance,, with steps which go best 'to syncopated polka time but 'which can be adapted to any foxtrot, Is to be launched today by one of England’s ballroom dancing experts. It is called the “1932 Tilt,” and, consisting of three short steps, a slip, and a quick 'click of the heels, is danced with hands held low, elbows out, and a sideward tilt of the body, from which Its name is derived.
Yesterday it was demonstrated and explained to me by its inventor, Miss Vacani, who said: “Ballroom dancing needed brightening up, as it does from time to time. I concentrated on that most English of dances, the polka; changed Its ‘one, two, three, hop,’.to ‘one, two, three, slip’; introduced a Click of the heels at the end of the slip; had' the pianist syncopate the old-fashioned tunes — and there It was.
Simplo and Lively. “The hands, held at an angle with the hip Instead of with the shoulder, give a slightly tilted effect, and allow more room for movement on a crowded floor. It is very simple, and the steps fit to any tune. Watch I” And as the pianist broke Into a lively rendering of a polka tune Miss Vacani seized her partner and showed me how it was done. It was gay; it was simple; it was livelier than the ordinary ballroom dancing. And when the music changed from a polka to a foxtrot it worried the dancers not at all.
