THE LATEST RETURNS. IMPROVEMENT IN POSITION. WELLINGTON, Thursday. During the four-weekly period end•d February 27, the railway working account showed an improvement. The latest return shows the position to be better by £23,316 than that for February last year. For the 48 weeks of •the financial year ended on February 27, the working profit is £114,600 'greater than in the corresponding • portion of 1930-31. ...Following is a summary of the dcteline in revenue and the reduction in ■'expenses in comparison with the previous year’s results for the various periods:—

, The gross earnings in the latest period were £554,331, and the exV.penses, £426,899, showing a working ’■V profit of £127,432. Operating revenue , in the North Island was £296.533, or v- about £34,500 less than in 1S31; ex- •* ’ponses were £236,788, a decline of ' £32,000. The working profit was .'£59,745, a decrease of £2OOO, compared with that for February, 1931. b The earnings of the South Island railways were . £204,210, which is £13,756 less than a year ago; expenses were £163.558, a de-.cline of £36,879, and working profit increased from £17,529 to £40,652. The net revenue from miscellaneous. services was £27,035, a decrease of £6229. Summary of Results. Following is a summary of the net results for the corresponding periods of four weeks in the last three years,.
