THEFT OF JEWELLERY.
PRISONER’S UNUSUAL REQUEST. TO RECOVER STOLEN PROPERTY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. The unusual request that before being sentenced he should be given an opportunity of trying to recover some of the stolen property -was made to Mr Justice Kennedy by William Newton, who appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering. Newton was concerned in the sensational robbery of jewellery from Dawson’s premises, from which Jewellery, valued at £3OOO was stolen. Accused's mate, Wilson, had previously been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in connection witli the same offence. Newton said he would assist the police in endeavouring to recover some of Hie stolen property. H was a rather difficult task, but. he thought he could recover some. The Ju ige deferred passing sentence till August 29.
