TWO BY-ELECTIONS.
CHANGES IN CANADA. CONSERVATIVES WIN AND LOSE. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. TORONTO, August 10. The Conservatives gained one seat and lost one in two Federal by-elections to-day. Mr Humphrey Mitchell (Labour) captured the East Hamilton seat, which is traditionally Conservative, by a majority of 3000 votes from Mr M. M. Robinson (Conservative). In the constituency of Three RiversSt. Maurice, Quebec, Mr Charles Bourgeois (Conservative) defeated Mr Wilfrid Gariepy (Liberal) by a majority of 251 votes. The Liberals had held the seat for 30 years. The by-elections were caused by the deaths of the former members.
At East Hamilton, Ontario, at the general election the late Mr G. S. Rennie had a majority over his Liberal opponent, Mr F. F. Treleaven, of 4778 votes, and over his Communist opponent, Mr Saul Cohen, of 12,548 votes. At Three Rivers-St, Maurice the late Mr A. Bettez, the Liberal candidate, had a majority of 3649 votes over his conservative opponent, Mr L. D. Durant.
