CHRISTCHURCH RATES.
REDUCTION OF 12J PER CENT. WORK AT STANDARD RATES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A reduction of 121 per cent. In rates Avas made by the City Council last night when the estimates for the current year wore adopted. Work for 1400 men at standard rates of pay is to be provided by the City Council, commencing from August 10. The total cost to the council Is expected to be £54,000, while the council expects to get £170,000 Avorth of work done for this expenditure. The chairman of the Finance Committee, Mr J. McCombs, M.P., said that in regard to a new roading loan of £.39,500 to be Avorked in conjunction with No. 5 scheme, the council had received a very favourable offer from London.
