PRISONER ACQUITTED.
ALLEGED FALSE TELEGRAM. A BETTING TRANSACTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) 1 WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Charged in the Supreme Court Avith' conspiring to defraud and av! th attempting to defraud by means of a false telegram, John Ma’tland, labourer, was acquitted by the jury tonight after a retirement of an hour. The case concerned a betting telegram to Charles Joseph Williams, Avhich, it Avas alleged, Avas altered after being handed in, the name of the horse Singleton being substituted by High Pitch. The telegram was sent to Williams, aa-lio Avas a bookmaker at Palmerston North. High Pitch paid a dividend Avhich would have returned Maitland £l3B 15s.
