THE MILK SUPPLY.

POSITION AT HOSPITAL.

EXAMINED BACTERIOLOGICALLY.

NATIONAL IMPROVEMENT NEEDED

"Our milk supply is bacteriologically examined once a month,” said Dr. M. M. Hockin, medical superintendant of the Waikato' Hospital in answer to a Waikato Times representative to-day. “It is also examined regularly for tuberculosis.”

“The generally accepted standard of bacteriological content in milk is anything below’ 50,000 -c.c. This Is considered satisfactory. The hospital count is below 20,000 c.c. “Milk originally Is sterile in the udder and is only contaminated in coming down the ducts and teats and by handling. The bacteriological count really represents the contamination in handling. "There is no doubt, speaking In general terms, that there is room for improvement in handling and the delivery of milk throughout New Zealand,” concluded Dr. Hockin. “It is also imperatively desirable for herds to he more thoroughly tested for tuberculosis.”
