CASEIN INDUSTRY,
MEETING AT RQTOTUNA. Messrs XV. Y. Kirkman (factory superintendent for the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company) and D. Bruce (director) met the suppliers of the Rotoluna factory on Monday to discuss the casein position. Mr A. H. Clement occupied the chair and there was a large attendMr Kirkman explained the situation with regard to the European markets. Germany, the largest purchaser for our casein in the past, is passing through a severe financial crisis and will not be in the position to enter Into negotiations profitable to us. Pending the solution of these difficulties it was decided to store the finished article, payment to suppliers to be made as sales are effected. As a result of the discussion the following resolutions were carried: — 1. That the Government be asked to review the duties on stock foods imported from Australia. 2. That the directors investigate the question of the sale of casein by barter to European Powers.
It was pointed out that New Zealand uses a considerable amount of fertiliser procurable only from Europe. Numerous questions were satisfactorily answered by the two speakers. Votes of thanks to Messrs Kirkman, Bruce and the chairman terminated the meeting.
