TROUBLE IN MEXICO,
ATTACK ON GOVERNOR. STATE IN A FERMENT. BISHOP’S DRAMATIC OFFER. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. MEXICO CITY, July 26. Sensational doings are reported from Vera Cruz. Religious difficulties there were followed by the attempted assassination of the Governor, Senhor Tejeda, by a youth who refused to explain his attack. However, 'lt !is pi/jsumed to have been due to displeasure over the Vera Cruz Government’s recent reduction of the number of priests permitted to perform their 'Offices, only a few being allowed to do so. The entire State to-day is in a ferment. As a reprisal for the attack on •the Governor anti-clericals murdered one priest, wounded a second and set fire to four important churches, all of which were closed, two being totally 'destroyed.
Immediately after this the Bishop of Vera Cruz, Monsignor Rafael Guizar Y'valencia, despatched a message to Senhor Tejeda saying:— “Before the Republic of the world I offer to present myself personally to you so that you may wound me and kill me if in exchange you promise all Vera Cruz Roman Catholics full liberty and undertake not to spill the blood of my priests.”
